Why design, function and a few luxuries make all the difference 

If there’s one room in the home that demands both form and function, it’s the kitchen. A place of gathering, entertaining, nourishing and, let’s be honest showing off just a little. The modern kitchen is no longer just a practical space. It’s the heart of the home, and increasingly, a space where thoughtful design and understated luxury make all the difference. 

Having worked on everything from grand countryside homes to chic city living apartments, I’ve learnt that the perfect kitchen isn’t about size, it’s about precision. It’s about choosing the right materials, mastering the layout, and integrating the right technology so that the experience of using your kitchen feels seamless, calm and beautifully efficient. 

Form Follows Function: The Pivot Rule 

Let’s start with layout, because everything flows from that. A beautifully designed kitchen will feel instinctive to use. One of the key principles I always come back to is “the pivot rule”; everything you need should be within a simple pivot from your core position at the hob. 

Imagine cooking: you need to reach for the bin to discard peelings, the sink to rinse vegetables, and the fridge for ingredients. These elements should form a subtle triangle around you, so you never feel like you’re rushing around your own space. Add to this clear zones for prep, cooking, serving, and even coffee-making, and you create a kitchen that supports you, rather than slowing you down. 

Surfaces That Last and Look the Part 

When it comes to materials, there’s no room for compromise. This is a space that works hard, so surfaces must be durable but beautiful. “Dekton” is having a real moment, and for good reason. Not only is it incredibly hard-wearing, offering resistance to heat, scratches, and stains, but it’s also striking to look at, with subtle veining and a silky finish that rivals even the most luxurious marble. 

Granite, of course, remains a timeless choice. I often specify it for clients who want something natural and enduring with a sense of gravitas. And for those seeking a super-sleek, modern aesthetic, especially when working with larger surface areas, “Corian” offers a seamless solution. Its ability to be moulded and joined without visible seams makes it ideal for fluid, contemporary spaces, especially when combined with integrated sinks and upstands. 

Appliances That Earn Their Place 

No matter how elegant your cabinetry or how refined your finishes, if your appliances aren’t up to standard, your kitchen won’t deliver. I’m increasingly installing steam ovens, which are gaining popularity for their ability to cook food gently, retaining nutrients and moisture, ideal for anyone keen on healthy eating without sacrificing flavour. 

A “Quooker” tap is another non-negotiable for me. It delivers boiling, chilled, filtered, and even sparkling water on demand, meaning no more kettles cluttering the worktop or endless plastic water bottles. It’s sleek, smart, and elevates everyday living in a way that feels quietly luxurious.

Hidden Treasures 

One of the strongest trends I’m seeing (and loving) right now is the rise of the “breakfast cupboard”. Gone are the days when your toaster and coffee machine had to sit out in plain sight. With beautifully designed pocket doors and internal shelving, you can hide away the essentials until you need them, keeping surfaces clean and creating a more calming, considered atmosphere. 

Add in “warming drawers” and “vacuum seal drawers” for keeping plates hot, proving dough or storing food smartly, and you begin to see how a kitchen can move beyond beautiful into quietly brilliant. In my own household, the warming drawer is a quiet hero and perfect for those evenings when my husband or I are running late and dinner’s already ready to serve. 

Elevation Through Cabinetry 

If you want to give your kitchen real impact, look to your cabinetry. Floor-to-ceiling units not only add valuable storage but they elongate the space and make it feel taller and more architectural. I love designing full-height cabinetry with integrated appliances, hidden larders and subtle finger pulls or push-touch doors to keep the look clean and contemporary. Fluted glass doors are a beautiful way to display glassware, and when paired with integrated lighting, they create the perfect soft, diffused glow. 

Pair this with layered lighting, spotlights on dimmers, integrated LED strips in shelves and under cabinets, and a statement pendant or three and the whole space takes on a mood and warmth that evolves from day to evening effortlessly.  

Expert Nugget - Avoid lighting beneath or integrated into the floor plinths as it’s a trend that’s come and gone, and for good reason. 

What’s On Trend? 

In terms of looks, warm minimalism continues to lead the way. Think pared-back design with rich materials: travertine, fluted wood, burnished metals, and soft, layered neutrals. Statement stone is also big news. Marble or manmade stone with bold veining, particularly in warmer tones like “Breccia Capraia” or Calacatta Viola can transform a simple island into a sculptural centrepiece. 

Colour-wise, kitchens are moving away from stark whites and embracing earthier tones such as mocha, sand and even olive. It’s all about depth and mood now. 

A truly perfect kitchen isn’t just a pretty space, it’s a lifestyle. One that makes cooking easier, mornings calmer, and evenings more enjoyable. Whether you’re entertaining friends, making pasta with the kids, or grabbing your morning coffee in peace, every detail should work for you. 

That’s the real luxury not in having more, but in having better. Better thought, better design, better living.
